Matching Rainbow Play Systems to Your Children’s Ages

Age-appropriate Guide for Playing on Rainbow Play Systems

There is a variety of Rainbow Play Systems available, but not all of it is suitable for all ages. Kids may want to do an activity that’s too advanced for them, which can result in a dangerous situation. Whether you’re searching for a play set to buy, or gauging whether to let your kids play in a neighbor’s backyard, keep these simple guidelines in mind.

Toddlers: under 2 years

The littlest tykes are still mastering movement, so the key is to give them space—to roll, crawl, walk, slide, and experiment with their new mobility. They love to grasp  things and climb, so it’s imperative to watch them around play equipment. It’s best to keep her close to the ground and give baby swings, ramps, and simple stairs to encourage movement.

Preschoolers: 2-5 years

In this age range, kids develop new skills and love to explore. They will jump, creep, and slide on anything they can attach themselves to. Approaching kindergarten, most children are exceptionally active as they build balance, flexibility, and strength. The 2- to 5-year-old play set often resembles the 5- to 12-year-old version, but steps are smaller, slides are shorter, and the general profile is lower. Engaging ladders and spiral slides provide countless hours of entertainment.

Elementary: 5-12 years

By the time children reach school age, they’re ready for more adventurous equipment. Monkey bars, cable walks, tire swings, and rock walls  develop agility and bodily awareness in a safe, fun way. In addition to play sets, kids need open spaces to burn off energy, and they thrive on opportunities to play together—pushing each other on swings, racing up and down ladders, and imagining fairy tales from a tower. As they become more comfortable in their bodies, elementary school kids are able to master ever more advanced play set equipment.

Many Rainbow Play Systems  offer options for expansion and addition, so that as your toddler or preschooler grows up, they can continue to amuse themselves with the same play structure.
