Unplug Your Kids from Technology

Did you know that kids spend an average of 52 hours a week in front of a screen? That’s a total of seven-and-a-half hours a day in front of a television, computer, and any other electronic device. Today, kids are being introduced to technology at younger ages. However, according to The American Academy of Pediatrics, young children should not be engaged with technology for more than two hours a day. When you unplug your kids from technology, even for a short amount of time, it allows them to engage with the real world and discover their creative potential. Here are a few ways to set boundaries around the screen.

Unplug And Reconnect: Schedule a tech-free time during which your family is able to enjoy a meal without interruptions, or to enjoy an old-fashioned family game night. Disconnecting from technology will allow everyone to have fun together and to reconnect as a family.

Get Moving: Physical activity is important for growing kids. Invite a few of your kids’ friends over for fun at your backyard playground. This will encourage creativity and social development. Even going to a park for an hour will allow your kids to be more active than they would be in front of a computer screen.

Offer Alternatives: There is a whole world of fun beyond the internet that kids can take advantage of. Help your kids write up a list of entertaining activities and games that are technology-free and fun. For example, create a treasure hunt for your kids to find items outside that they can learn about.

Be An Example:Parents should unplug, too! When kids see that, they will emulate the behavior. Put away your cell phone and tablet when the kids are having their playtime on their Rainbow Play Systems swings. Share hobbies and interests that you enjoy, and encourage your children to get involved in non-technology-centered hobbies, as well.

Technology is a part of our daily lives, and we can’t eschew it entirely. However, it’s possible to maintain a balance of technology and non-technological activities for your kids to enjoy a creative, active, and happy life.
